Gum disease, tooth loss and advanced tooth decay, can significantly compromise the function and appearance of your mouth. If the problem is extensive enough, your dentist, Dr. Adam Hodges, might recommend extracting one or all of your teeth in preparation for fitting you for a set of dentures.

There are a few basic tips that can help speed up your recovery after having multiple tooth extractions.

Your oral surgeon will recommend that you are deeply sedated when you have multiple teeth extracted. This means that you will need to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.

Tobacco use can irritate your gums while they are healing. It can significantly increase your recovery time and your chances of developing an infection. If you use tobacco on a regular basis, you might want to talk to your primary physician in advance about a tobacco-cessation program. If possible, choose a program that doesn’t involve lozenges or nicotine gum because they can also irritate healing gum tissue.

You will need to stick to a soft-foods diet while your gums are healing. Staying properly hydrated is also important. Drink plenty of lukewarm liquids without using a straw. The suction from the straw can harm the incisions or pull blood clots loose.

It’s natural to experience a little bleeding in the incisions for a few days after the tooth extraction. To help it, you can lightly pack the area with sterile gauze. Once the bleeding stops, you can rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm saltwater to remove blood clots and soothe the gums.
