How Does Chewing Gum Affect Your Oral Health?

Posted .

You might know that there are a number of things you should do if you’re interested in enjoying a healthy smile. For instance, you might know that you should avoid sugary foods. While you might think gum is one of the foods you should avoid, would you be surprised to hear that gum actually offers several benefits?

For example, chewing gum can actually leave you less vulnerable to cavities because the chewing motion produces saliva. Saliva actually carries bacteria and food particles away from your teeth. Saliva can also help your enamel–which is the outer layer of your teeth–strengthen. However, please note that chewing gum shouldn’t be used as a replacement for brushing and flossing.

Still, even though chewing gum can benefit your teeth, some types of gum are better than other. You should avoid gum with sugar in it. If you chew gum with sugar, you may as well be eating candy. When you choose a pack of gum, we recommend looking for gum with xylitol in it. Xylitol can actually strengthen your enamel and neutralize bad bacteria.
